Victory in war is not achieved by firepower alone. A combination of factors such as tactics, intelligence, technological superiority and grit of the soldiers, also come into play. The side having better equipped and experienced personnel has a clear advantage over the inferior opposition, even if the difference is diminutive.

The concept of a military college was borne out of the need for a trained and disciplined military, and hence a gurukul where soldiers or prospective soldiers are taught the intricacies of war and other battlefield maneuvers, so that the graduates are ready to take on any war-related scenario with little or no further preparation. In fact, such military college existed in the past, but the sophistication we have in today’s military college needs intensive study. True - war settles nothing. Given the inherent tendency of humans to harm each other, military training facilities like a military college, is a necessity for every country to groom and nurture its future defense lines, commanders and tacticians.

In all the three conventional departments of Army, Navy and Air Force, the commanding officers and generals, are alumni of some premium military college, in their respective countries. Military college that churn out the building blocks or masses of Army, Navy and Air Force may be different and would be based in several locations, but their purpose of existence is the same – to groom young men on whose shoulders the nation’s future defense would lie.

In a military college, the prospective soldiers are taught every thing from warfare, military tactics, engineering, fortification and basic knowledge in science subjects, which could be of practical implementation at some point in their military careers. Apart from subject classes, the cadets are taken through a rigorous and stringent regime of physical exercises, war arms training and simulated combat sessions and mock war scenes. War arms training introduces the cadets to the latest and advanced firearms possessed by the respective armies, while simulated combat environs give the students’ practical field training for the skills they have acquired.

After the general skill development, required expertise in respective fields of various wings of the military - army, air force and navy - are systematically inculcated by means of practical and theoretical training lessons. When it comes to specialization, the cadets are usually classified according to their skill-sets and talents, and are further trained in the respective departments. Thus, when they eventually graduate they are ready to join the relevant departments.

Unlike the United States, in Canada the Regional Military College (RMC) is the only college of its type that exists in the country. It was established in 1874 for the purpose of systematically grooming a solid military force, a service it has been offering without fail since then. From the North-West Rebellion of 1885, the South African War, through the First and Second World Wars, the Persian Gulf, and the latest peace keeping operations, the graduates from the RMC have played a vital role in times when their country needed them the most.
